The Large Scale Energy Landscape of Randomly Pinned Objects
We discuss the large scale effective potential for elastic objects (manifolds) in the presence of a random pinning potential, from the point of view of the Functional Renormalisation Group (FRG) and of the replica method. Both approaches suggest that the energy landscape at large scales is a succession of parabolic wells of random depth, matching on singular points where the effective force is ...
متن کاملGlobal optimization by energy landscape paving.
We introduce a novel heuristic global optimization method, energy landscape paving (ELP), which combines core ideas from energy surface deformation and tabu search. In appropriate limits, ELP reduces to existing techniques. The approach is very general and flexible and is illustrated here on two protein folding problems. For these examples, the technique gives faster convergence to the global m...
متن کاملCollective diffusion and a random energy landscape
Starting from a master equation in a quantum Hamiltonian form and a coupling to a heat bath, we derive an evolution equation for a collective hopping process under the influence of a stochastic energy landscape. Different equations result for an arbitrary occupation number per lattice site or in a system under exclusion. Based on scaling arguments it will be demonstrated that both systems belon...
متن کاملDiscretizing manifolds via minimum energy points
An intuitive method for distributing N points on a manifold A ⊂ Rd is to consider minimal s-energy arrangements of points that interact through a power law (Riesz) potential V = 1/r, where s > 0 and r is Euclidean distance in R 0 . Under what conditions will these points be “uniformly” distributed on A for large N? In this talk I will present recent results characterizing asymptotic properties ...
متن کاملThe Pontryagin Forms of Hessian Manifolds
We show that Hessian manifolds of dimensions 4 and above must have vanishing Pontryagin forms. This gives a topological obstruction to the existence of Hessian metrics. We find an additional explicit curvature identity for Hessian 4-manifolds. By contrast, we show that all analytic Riemannian 2-manifolds are Hessian.
